The Westonka Food Shelf began serving our community in 1969. Thanks to our community’s generosity, a mission that started with helping just a few families has grown to provide healthy options to many needing assistance in Mound, Minnetrista, Navarre, Spring Park, St. Bonifacius, Tonka Bay, Independence and parts of Orono today.
We currently serve approximately 200 families per month, distributing 16,000 pounds of food. Last year, we had 2,248 visits to the food shelf. Additionally, we provided nearly 300 families with baskets at each of the major holidays of Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
March is Minnesota FoodShare month. Every donation we receive, whether monetary or food, is eligible for a percentage of matching funds from The Greater Minneapolis/Council of Churches and The Feinstein Foundation. The more we receive, the larger percentage of match we can expect. As such, we are reaching out to all members of our community with various programs during March to maximize our donations. Look for our Stuff the Bus and Pack the Pews Campaigns, join us at our Open House and contribute at various donation bins throughout the community.
Because of our partnership with local food banks and grant opportunities, every dollar donated can go approximately 9x further. One hundred percent of every donation made to The Westonka Food Shelf is returned to low income families in the form of food. We accomplish this by being fully volunteer staffed and occupying building space that has been donated to us. Our mission is to not only help those in need, but be good stewards of any donation.
